The story of the couple closely resembles that of two other lovers and martyrs of the faith whose poem will sing in the last song, Gildippe and Odoardo but also very closely recalls the tragic and rebirth fate of the Saracen heroine, Clorinda, baptized in point of death and then transformed into a high cypress. All played, in fact, on the rhetoric of metamorphosis, the episode of Sofronia and Olindo, passed from the stake to the wedding, preludes the elegiac funer…
Voglio tempo.
2014
ABSTRACT: Allegorical and emblematic images do not appear exclusively in visual literature: Genres such as the Italian or the Italian-inspired Counter-Reformation oratorios, cantatas and sacred or moral operas often contain images quite similar in form and function to those published in the Seventeenth and early Eighteenth-century European collections of emblems. This article analyses some of these parallelisms in the particular case of Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (c. 1707), by the librettist and patron of the arts Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj and the composer Georg Friedrich Handel. KEYWORDS: Emblem, Opera, Oratorio, Academy, Discourse, Allegory, Rhetoric, Aural, Visual, Pamphilj,…
Premeditated automaticity : the role of explicit cognition in the development of obsessive smoking
2010
- Abstract The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of explicit cognitions in relation to the development of obsessive smoking passion. Data derives from a longitudinal internet survey conducted among 939 daily smokers over a period of four months. Mental representations were the strongest predictor of obsessive smoking passion (ß=.47, p<.001) followed by habit strength (ß=.25, p<.001) and number of cigarettes smoked (ß=.09, p<.01). Altogether the variables accounted for 48% of the variance in obsessive smoking passion. The results indicated that mental representations, along with automatic processes, play an important role in the prediction of obsessive smoking passion. The…
